The Shapes: Simon
Get to know the shapes that make up Rhombus. Reintroducing: Simon, our Co-founder and Managing Director.
We’re chatting with members of the studio about what makes them who they are – both in and out of the studio. Reintroducing: Simon, our Co-founder and Managing Director. When he’s not blending his love of history and video games, Simon’s all about finding the right creative partnerships and shaping work that makes an impact, with a sharp eye for strategy and a deep appreciation for branding.
Who are you and what do you do?
Co-founder and Managing Director
What are you into outside of the studio?
I’m a big fan of history and video games. Ideally combining the two! I also love to read. History and fantasy mostly.
What are you working on right now?
Growing Rhombus. Working on finding the right kind of clients that align with our rebrand and new position.
What has been your favourite project to work on at the studio and why?
Hard one to answer. Lakota will always have a special place, as it was such a big part of my youth as a Bristolian marking my first ever club night at the age of 16. However, I would have to say there’s an upcoming project that is the front runner at the moment, it’s super aligned with our new position and I’ve actually been doing some of the creative work (first time in about 4 years!).
What would be your dream branding project?
I’ve always thought it would be a football team, and I would still love to do one, but these days I would probably say some kind of national initiative or institution with a sprinkle of history, something like The British Museum.
How do you stay inspired/keep your creative cup topped up?
As a predominantly non-creative member of the team, my cup is usually pretty full, but I’m always on the look out for inspiring branding or website work. I love the opportunity to put my creative oar into any of the projects we are running.
Which tool could you not live without?
Spreadsheets (I wish that was a joke!)
What’s one piece of design advice you wish you’d known when you started?
Don’t be afraid to question the client and put your own opinions out there. The clients come to you for the creative, so back yourself as the expert in that relationship.
Favourite studio or designer that you look up to?
Eeesh. So many. Dixon Baxi have always been a favourite, but one individual that has inspired both James and I is Paula Scher
Favourite bit of branding from the last year?
Love the RSPCA rebrand by JKR.
Favourite takeaway order when working late on a deadline?
We are partial to an Athenian wrap. Fills you up but doesn’t slow you down.
Favourite album to work to?
So many! But Selected Ambient Works 85-92 – Aphex Twin and Music For 18 Musicians – Steve Reich have both been in my Spotify Wrapped for the last 5 years though.
